Conventional canola oil is already recognized for having zero trans fats and one of the lowest levels of saturated fats. With the development of Omega-9 Canola Oil, it also has uniquely high heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which research has shown can positively impact cholesterol levels, reduce cardiovascular disease and lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. Canola oil is versatile and used in a variety of applications from cooking oil and sprays to salad dressings, margarines and shortenings, as well as baking, sandwich spreads, coffee creamers and deep frying.
Canola is a widely adapted crop, popular among farmers in Western Canada and the Northern United States primarily because it is profitable and a good rotational crop for cereal grains. Canola acres in North America are at an all-time high of nearly 22 million acres. The plants are recognizable by their small yellow flowers, but are valued for the oil-rich seeds they produce. Each canola seed is about 44% oil — among the highest of the oilseed crops.
The use of canola is also rapidly growing in the North American food industry. Canola is now the second-most widely used oil in the United States. In response to this increasing demand, Omega-9 Canola Oil volume has doubled to total more than 1 billion pounds annually. Since 2008, more than $1 billion has been invested to support the increase in North American canola processing capacity, and further expansion is underway.
